I’ve published a new essay on Substance and Accident in Life Issues. The notions of substance and accident introduce some much needed clarity into the debate on life issues, enabling a more reasoned discussion. On the question of when new life begins, the distinction allows a clear separation to be made between the material development that results in the physical separation of mother and child at birth, and actual beginning of a new life. In the matter of organ donation, the terms allow for clarity in the consideration of the effect of organ transplant on the identity of the recipient. Finally, the notions also introduce clarity into discussion over precisely when death occurs.
